AstraZeneca and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration have agreed to settle allegations that the company improperly marketed and distributed its popular painkiller esomeprazole (Nexium) to treat a serious condition known as esophagitis. The settlement resolves allegations that the company marketed and sold the drug as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for stomach pain, including esomeprazole. AstraZeneca has denied all allegations.
Esomeprazole is used to treat a number of gastrointestinal conditions. AstraZeneca says it has not received any reports of serious side effects, including heart problems. The FDA issued an advisory in November to the European Medicines Agency to settle an investigation into the matter.
“In this case, we found that AstraZeneca’s marketing and sales practices were not properly controlled,” said U. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont). “We believe the appropriate regulatory action should be taken to correct violations of U. law.”
Sanders, a>: “This is a big deal. AstraZeneca has no intention of stopping the company from producing and marketing its own generic esomeprazole.”
